Tajweed Rules Every Beginner Should Know

Tajweed is the set of rules governing how the Holy Quran should be correctly pronounced and recited. For beginners, Tajweed can initially feel overwhelming — but understanding a few foundational rules makes an enormous difference in recitation accuracy. Makhaarij: The Articulation Points

Before learning any Tajweed rule, a student must first master Makhaarij — the precise point in the mouth or throat where each Arabic letter originates. Correct Makhaarij ensures letters like Ha (ح) and Kha (خ), which sound similar to untrained ears, are pronounced distinctly.

Ghunnah: The Nasal Sound

Ghunnah refers to the nasal sound produced when pronouncing Noon (ن) and Meem (م) with a Shaddah. This rule is one of the first taught because it appears extremely frequently throughout the Quran.

Qalqalah: The Bouncing Sound

Qalqalah applies to five specific letters — Qaf, Ta, Ba, Jeem, and Dal — when they carry a Sukoon. These letters require a slight bouncing or echoing sound rather than being pronounced flatly.

Madd: Elongation Rules

Madd rules govern how long certain vowel sounds should be elongated, measured in counts called Harakat. Getting Madd durations correct is essential, as shortening or lengthening incorrectly can alter both the rhythm and, in some cases, the meaning of the recitation.

Idghaam, Ikhfa, and Iqlab

These three rules govern how Noon Sakinah and Tanween are pronounced depending on the letter that follows them — merging (Idghaam), concealing (Ikhfa), or converting to a Meem sound (Iqlab). Mastering these rules significantly improves recitation fluency.
